Light influences how we feel, how we sleep, how we perform and even how healthy we stay. In a world where we spend most of our time indoors, the quality of artificial light is becoming increasingly important to our well-being. That is why Illuxtron focuses not only on developing high-quality LED fixtures, but also on lighting that actively contributes to the health and comfort of our daily living and working environments.
What is healthy light?
Healthy light refers to lighting that is tailored to the natural day and night rhythm of humans. This rhythm controls our sleep, alertness, hormone balance and recovery, among other things. Unlike traditional lighting (which focuses primarily on visibility and energy efficiency), “healthy light” also takes into account the biological effects of light on our bodies. Healthy light is determined by several factors:
- Colour warmth
- Intensity
- Timing
- Angle
- Duration and exposure
This combination determines the extent to which light supports or disrupts our circadian rhythm.
The effects of healthy light on health and performance
The importance of healthy light has now been scientifically recognised. A large-scale survey of 248 scientists, who have published more than 2,600 peer-reviewed publications on light and the circadian system since 2008, shows a clear consensus. This research shows that healthy light contributes to:
- Better sleep
- Better performance
- Increased focus
- Stronger immune system
- Lower risk of a burn-out
- Reducing health risks such as obesity, cancer and dementia
After more than 20 years of research, Brainlit can also demonstrate that lighting that actively supports the circadian rhythm actually delivers measurable health benefits in a wide range of applications.
BCL solutions
Biocentric Lighting (BCL) plays an important role in our Light & Health solutions. This lighting method was developed to actively support the biological rhythm of humans using measurable and scientifically based light recipes. BCL is tailored to three essential factors:
- The target group (such as the elderly, athletes or office workers)
- The environment (healthcare, office, sports, hospitality)
For more information about the differences per application, see The different applications of BCL.
