Light and our biological clock
Human Centric Lighting is set to play a major role in the future of the lighting industry. This revolutionary approach to lighting puts the individual human in the middle. Our biological clock is tuned to natural daylight, and artificial light often doesn't come close. On a sunny day outdoors you will experience levels around 100,000 lux (lux=lumen/m2), on a cloudy day this will drop to 10,000 lux. Contrast that with the lumen output normally encountered in schools (300 lux) or offices (500 lux). Human Centric Lighting is the new direction in lighting, aiming to replicate the form, light intensity and variation over time of natural light.
Light makes you happy
A lack of daylight can lead to health complaints, problems with concentration, sleep and even depression. A lack of daylight plays a major role in so-called seasonal affective disorder. Because Human Centric Lighting simulates natural daylight it is more in sympathy with our biological clock. It ensures that we are more alert, that we have more energy left at the end of the day and that we sleep better at night. There are also positive effects on mood: we feel better, happier and more contented.
What else is it good for?
Lighting based on human needs allows us to see better and feel better. But it also affects our performance. It can for example improve the performance of students. The productivity of workers is increased while the error rate falls, resulting in profitability. Occupants of care centres and hospital patients also benefit from lighting attuned to their needs.
How does it work?
Human Centric Lighting is designed to match natural human needs as closely as possible. HCL is not a single solution, it involves a combination of mutually compatible drivers, control systems and lighting technology.
Illuxtron and Human Centric Lighting
Tuneable LED panels already featured in the Illuxtron range. The term "tuneable" refers to the modification of colour temperature via a connected system, for example Aviora, with a UGR lower than 16. This delivers a combination of low UGR and low glare, so that users experience less distraction and their level of concentration remains high.
